Finnish Red Cross Specialized ERU Medical Training
The Specialized ERU Medical Training improves the participants' competencies in working within Red Cross Red Crescent Movement emergency operations as part of Health Emergency Response Units or Rapid Deployments (ERU/RD).
Delegates who wish to be deployed to international missions as part of Health ERUs are required to complete both ERU Induction and Specialized ERU Medical trainings. A newly developed face-to-face simulation deployment is recommended as a complementary training to all Health ERU trained staff once the basic ERU trainings have been completed.
Before the training, we will share your name, profession, hometown and email address with other participants of this training by email. The list of participants is meant for strictly personal use. As our delegate trainings rely on peer learning, the list is your reference to who you will be learning with.
Timing and Venue
The training will start on Thursday September 1 at 11.30 am and finish on Sunday September 4 latest at 3 pm. Please note that active participation and full attendance is expected from all training participants throughout the training.
The training will take place in Finnish Red Cross Logistics Center Kalkku, Kalkun kehätie 4, 33330, Tampere. Accommodation will be organized in shared rooms at another location.
Learning Objectives
The training aims to
・improve the participants’ understanding on global and Red Cross Red Crescent humanitarian assistance related to Health ERU/RD work
・raise the participants’ awareness on Standard Operating Procedures, guidelines and standards guiding the Health ERU deployments
・upgrade the participants’ technical knowledge relevant for working in Health ERUs
・provide adequate practical know-how for working in Health ERUs
After attending the training, the participants will be able to understand and implement a community-centered approach, support the delivery of services that address the unique health needs of specific groups, and promote the well-being and dignity of the individuals we serve.
Training Methods
The training will include a variety of methods both theoretical and practical such as presentations, group work, dialogue and practical hands-on exercises. Due to sending both an ERU Hospital and ERU Clinic to the field during the past year, we will have a limited amount of position-specific equipment and tools available to familiarize with in the training.
Pre-Assignments
The self-study module is part of Specialized ERU Medical training, and the course cannot be successfully completed without completing the online trainings and pre-assignments. You will receive information of the mandatory online courses in early August the latest.
Participants who are yet to complete ERU Induction training are expected to complete further assignments that complement the course content. This is to ensure that all participants have the relevant background knowledge at the beginning of the training.
To complement your knowledge and skills on the course topics before the mandatory online courses, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the material listed below. The list below does not include the mandatory online courses.
- Take an introduction to surge with Surge Video Series: an introduction to Rapid Response in Disasters and Crisis. You can complete the entire curriculum or choose the 20-minute episodes relevant to your delegate profile.
- Complete E-Learning course Sphere Handbook in Action (English) (15h) at the IFRC Learning platform, or alternatively, read about humanitarian charter and minimum standards in humanitarian response in the Sphere handbook
- Complete the UNFPA online course Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for reproductive health in crisis situations, especially if you are a midwife, obstetrician, public health nurse or GP.
- Explore IFRC Go web site: https://go.ifrc.org to learn about IFRC disaster response operations and Catalogue of Surge Services, including role profiles for Rapid Response personnel.
- Familiarize yourself with policy papers, guidelines, standards and procedures relevant to ERU/RD assignments (password ERU2022) and WHO guidelines and publications
- Make sure your REST profile is up to date – this is an integral part of personal preparedness for missions.
Pandemic precautions
We will continuously assess the pandemic situation and follow the instructions given by authorities. Based on the current forecast, we expect that training can take place face-to-face in September. It is worth noting that the participants will be in close contact (within 1,5-meter distance) with each other during the training, for example in accommodation and possibly in transportation to the training venue, as physical distances cannot be guaranteed during the training. Surgical face masks and hand sanitizer will be available during the training.
Please note the possibility that the training might have to be cancelled or postponed. The participants will be informed immediately should the training be cancelled/postponed. All participants are advised to ensure that the travel tickets they have are flexible and allow cancellations.
