Residents Take the Lead in Disaster Preparedness: A Report on the Evacuation Drill in Indonesia.
See how the event went here

As part of an international cooperation project supported by the Japanese Red Cross Society(JRCS), an evacuation drill was held on September 13, 2026, in the Puger area of Jember, Indonesia.
Puger is a coastal area with a thriving fishing industry. As tsunamis have been recorded there in the past, it is an area where preparedness for earthquakes and tsunamis is essential. In this drill, SIBAT, a community-based disaster preparedness volunteer group, took the lead in guiding residents to evacuation sites.

On the day of the drill, participating residents were given yellow ribbons to wear as identification markers, and the drill began with the sound of a "kentongan," a traditional Indonesian signaling tool. Guided by SIBAT members, residents made their way on foot to their respective evacuation sites. After arriving, they took part in a disaster preparedness session led by the Indonesian Red Cross Society (PMI).
Children and elderly residents also took part in the drill, making it an opportunity for the whole community to raise awareness of disaster preparedness. SIBAT members coordinated with each other using radios and mobile phones while guiding residents, and used a dedicated assessment form to closely monitor the drill—demonstrating a well-organized approach to implementation.
Participating residents shared comments such as "It was fun!" and "I'm glad I took part," reflecting how disaster preparedness activities rooted in the local community continue to grow.

SIBAT leader Ms. Risza shared her thoughts on working alongside the community, saying, "I love seeing SIBAT members and people in the community smiling."

The JRCS, together with the PMI, is implementing a project to strengthen disaster preparedness in Indonesia by enhancing disaster preparedness in schools and communities(the SCR project).
The JRCS’s activities in Japan and overseas are supported by the continued support of our donors.
