国際支援事業の現場から② 青少年赤十字大会in Jember From the Field of International Humanitarian Assistance②Junior Red Cross Competition in Jember, Indonesia

Since September 2026, Ms. Omura, Planning Section Chief, General Affairs Section, Kanagawa Blood Center, has been dispatched to Indonesia. This is the second article in our series, introducing her activities and experiences in the field.
Visiting a Junior Red Cross Competition in Jember, Indonesia
Learning How to Help Others and Prepare for Disasters
See how the event went here.

A Junior Red Cross (Palang Merah Remaja Madya: PMR) competition for junior high school students was held in Jember, Indonesia.
I visited the competition to learn more about how children in Indonesia learn about the Red Cross, disaster preparedness, first aid, and other skills through activities organized by the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia:PMI).

Working Hard to Prepare for the Competition
At the Jember branch of PMI, students were practicing for the competition.
Students participating in the poster presentation category researched topics such as the Red Cross and floods and created their own posters.
In the stretcher-making category, students participated in teams of three. They built sturdy, practical stretchers that could actually be used to carry someone in an emergency. I was impressed by how seriously the students practiced making them over and over again.
I also spoke with several students who were practicing and asked them why they participate in PMI activities. One of them, Satyria, shared his thoughts.
Satyria
Satyria told me that he likes Japanese manga.
“There are many interesting things to do with PMI. For example, making emergency stretchers. I like making stretchers, and I love training together with everyone in the Junior Red Cross.”
He told me this with a big smile.

Around 3,000 Students from 21 Schools Took Part
The competition finally arrived.
Held at a high school in Jember, the Junior Red Cross competition brought together around 3,000 junior high school students from 21 schools. I was surprised by the large scale of the event and the number of students taking part.
I found it particularly interesting that students have opportunities from a young age to learn and develop knowledge and skills related to disaster preparedness, first aid, and Red Cross activities through competitions and practical activities.

Volunteers Supporting Volunteers
When I observed the first aid competition, I saw Red Cross volunteers aged 1918 to 35, known as Korp Sukarela (KSR), serving as judges.
For the students, seeing young volunteers who are actively involved in Red Cross activities can provide positive role models for their future. I felt that experiences like this may also encourage them to continue participating in Red Cross activities as they grow older.

Learning Beyond the Competition
Some of the activities at the competition involved students from different schools forming teams and competing together.
Because the students did not necessarily know each other beforehand, they were given time to interact and get to know one another before the competition.
A staff member explained that one of the purposes of these activities is to help students develop their communication skills.
Through these activities, students are not only learning about first aid and disaster preparedness. They are also developing the ability to communicate with people they have just met and work together to solve challenges.
The students worked hard with their friends to prepare for the competition, learning a wide range of skills, including first aid, stretcher-making, Red Cross knowledge, and teamwork.
Watching them, I felt that through Red Cross activities, the children are developing the ability to help others and the ability to prepare for disasters.

The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS), together with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), is implementing a project to strengthen disaster preparedness in Indonesia through the School and Community Resilience Project.
The Japanese Red Cross Society's activities in Japan and overseas are made possible by the continued support of our donors.
