The members of “Moe-no-kai”, the volunteer group for disaster prevention, served miso soup with pork and vegetables to visitors at the event. “We enjoy making the visitors happy,” said one of the members as she served the soup with a smile.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto Chapter in Tabaruzaka Park in Kumamoto City, where is known as “the birthplace of the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS)”. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto Blood Center.

To celebrate these anniversaries, the Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto Chapter organized an event titled “Cross More with Red Cross in Kumamoto” on February 7, 2015. The event included activities which entire family could enjoy. “I am looking forward to other events in the future.” said one of the visitors. Roughly one thousand visitors attended the anniversary celebrations.

The purpose of the event was to promote the activities of JRCS that improve people’s health and protect people’s lives to the residents of Kumamoto prefecture. At the same time the celebrations provided an opportunity to encourage young people to donate blood, as a part of the campaign called “give blood at twenty” meaning “, blood donation is encouraged at the age of twenty”.

Other attractions included an exhibition of panels about the JRCS history and activities, stage performances, health consultations and a first aid workshop.

“Perhaps we will panic if someone falls unconscious in front of us, but if we know first aid we can work together to save the person’s life,” said one of the participants in the first aid workshop, where JRCS staff and volunteers demonstrated how to use the AED (automatic external defibrillator).
